What is Depression

Depression can be mild, moderate or severe, and can have a significant impact on how you feel, think, and behave. It can arise as a result of changes in brain chemistry, genetics, or external factors e.g., chronic stressors, or painful life events.

There are various signs and symptoms of depression including:

  • Deep-seated sadness
  • Withdrawal
  • Appetite changes
  • Increased fatigue
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Apathy or feelings of futility
  • Inability to sit still
  • Difficulty in decision-making, concentrating or thinking
  • Feelings of worthlessness and guilt
  • Suicidal thoughts

Counselling for Depression

Research shows that CBT therapy is one of the most effective interventions for successfully treating depression. It is sometimes offered in conjunction with prescribed medication.

Therapy can provide a safe space in which to process feelings and bring focus to finding ways forward by recognising unhelpful or distorted thinking patterns, with the intent of changing these thoughts and resulting behaviours. It also allows you to respond to challenges in a way that’s more helpful to you.
